Specification-Grade Recovered Lumber (SRL™)

A standardized, non-structural material classification for reclaimed wood.

Specification-Grade Recovered Lumber (SRL™) is industrially recovered wood processed to defined grading, moisture, and traceability standards. It is designed for architectural, commercial, and manufacturing applications where reclaimed wood must perform consistently and be specified with confidence.

Why SRL exists

Reclaimed wood has long lacked consistency, documentation, and clear specification language. SRL exists to address that gap.

It introduces a clear material standard so recovered wood can move beyond one-off use and integrate into modern supply chains.

SRL is not a brand of wood.
It is a material standard.

Scope

SRL applies to:

  • Non-structural interior and exterior finishing applications

  • Panelling, flooring, trim, feature walls, mantels, laminated panels, and furniture components

  • Applications requiring defined moisture control, grading, and documentation

SRL does not apply to:

  • Structural or load-bearing members

  • Framing, trusses, or engineered wood products

Designation:
All SRL™ materials are labeled Non-Structural Use Only.

How SRL is defined

SRL is governed by a technical standard that establishes:

  • Grading rules based on appearance and intended use

  • Moisture limits and dimensional tolerances

  • Chain-of-custody and batch traceability

  • Documentation and certificates of compliance

Grades include SRL Premium, SRL Builder, and SRL Industrial.
All grades meet minimum moisture and quality controls before classification.

Traceability and carbon context

Each SRL batch is traceable to its recovery region and processing period, supporting specification, procurement, and ESG reporting.

Because SRL is produced from recovered material, it avoids new harvest emissions and prevents wood fibre from decomposing in landfill conditions. Third-party verification and EPD development are underway.

Making reclaimed wood reliable at scale

Specification-Grade Recovered Lumber is governed by a defined technical standard that establishes grading, moisture control, traceability, and documentation requirements for non-structural reclaimed wood.

The SRL Technical Standard is currently under validation and is made available to partners, specifiers, and reviewers as part of Northmark’s national adoption process. Contact Northmark Materials to request access.
