Working with reclaimed wood offers countless benefits for the environment, individuals and organizations involved in any number of projects from arts and crafts to large scale commercial construction.
It can and will be reused for generations and for a wide variety of applications.
Local Sourcing and Economic Opportunities: We are an emerging small business with a vision for a local circular economy in the second use wood products space. Local on every level.
Sourcing, processing and distribution.
We Up-cycle and Reuse!
Circular Economy: Minimize waste - maximize resources!
Personal Satisfaction: For myself and many other artisans and DIY enthusiasts, working with Old Canadian Wood is a highly rewarding experience. We get to create and transform while making a difference.
We Assume the Risk: We metal detect... and metal detect... and metal detect again... When you use our kiln dried, surfaced and milled wood products you can create with confidence and keep your blades in good shape.
High Quality and Durability: Today's reclaimed wood most often comes from older growth trees that are more robust with tighter grain patterns offering a higher-quality wood than what's currently available at a commercial level.
We take that up a notch with our attention to moisture control. We Kiln dry our lumber to under 8% at its end use thickness to ensure your projects and furniture pieces stay looking and functioning as designed through thick and thin!
Unique Aesthetic Appeal: Reclaimed wood often carries unique character and history. It may have distinctive features like nail holes, knots, saw marks, and weathering that add charm and character to finished products. This creates a one-of-a-kind look that can't be replicated with new wood.
Reduction of Landfill Waste: Using reclaimed wood prevents old wood from ending up in landfills, where it would otherwise contribute to environmental problems such as methane gas release.
Cultural and Historical Value: Some of our reclaimed wood comes from old barns, factories, or other structures that have historical significance. Using this wood connects a piece to a specific time and place, adding cultural and historical value.
Energy and Resource Conservation: Manufacturing new wood products consumes energy and resources, including water, electricity, and fossil fuels. Using reclaimed wood reduces human pressures on the planet.
Versatility and Adaptability: Reclaimed wood can be used for a wide range of projects, including furniture, flooring, paneling, and more. It can be easily adapted to suit various design styles, from rustic to contemporary.
Lower Carbon Footprint: Using reclaimed wood for new projects reduces the carbon footprint of construction.
It's important to note that sourcing and working with reclaimed wood can also present challenges. These may include higher upfront costs and limited availability of uniform supply however, the positive environmental and aesthetic aspects of lumber reuse outweigh these considerations.
What's locked away in Western Canada's first generation structures is the most environmentally friendly source of raw lumber we have access to. It is the easiest way we can make a difference in this world.
